LOWELL, Mass. – The Endicott crew team traveled to Lowell, Mass. to compete in the Textile River Regatta last weekend to open its fall racing season. The Textile River Regatta, which featured crews from all across New England and New York, acted as a great measuring stick for the Gulls to see where they stacked up regionally after their first three weeks of training. The Textile River Regatta featured some rough conditions due to the high winds blowing directly down the course and offered the crew team an opportunity to row and persevere through difficult waters.
First down the course was the Men's 4+ Comprised of senior leader Tarryn Phaneuf (Ashland, Mass.) at coxswain, sophomore Jake Somosky (Glastonbury, Conn.) at stroke, sophomore Jesse Gottesdiener (Newton Center, Mass.) in the three seat, freshman Zackery Mogensen (Westernville, N.Y.), who was competing in his first collegiate race in the two seat, and junior Brendan McGuire (Kings Park, N.Y.) in bow.
On the course, the men were focused on trying to put together a full race holding their rhythm and leg drive through the rough water. The boat able to push through and completed the 5,800-meter course in 27:37. The men's contingent of the Gulls squad will be compete next Saturday, October 10 at the Snake Regatta in Worcester, Mass. They will work diligently throughout the next week to continue to gel and take the next step on the race course.
Next down the course was the Endicott Women's 4+ led by junior coxswain Amanda Wolter (Chesapeak, Va.). Powering the boat from stroke to bow were sophomore Brenna Shanahan (Shelton, Conn.), seniors Kendra Czernicki (North Chelmsford, Mass.), and Erika Mercieri (Monson, Mass.) and junior Claire McKinnon West Roxbury, Mass.).
This boat was able to develop a strong rhythm in practice and focused on trying to really attack the the course aggressively in their first competition of the year. The Gulls were able to execute their goal of keeping an attacking rhythm through the full 5,800-meters and put up a great result. The boat finished the day in 27:49 good enough for 13th place in a strong field of 23 boats.
This coming week the boat will focus on trying to retain length and proper blade prep while aggressively racing.
The final two events of the day for the team were the Women's Novice 8 and the Women's Open 8+. These two events were however cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.
In the freshmen led Novice 8+ freshmen coxswain Caroline Judd (Litchfield, Conn.), stroke Victoria Ziolek (Nashua, N.H.), Charley Dimmock (Quaker Hill, Conn.), Kaitlyn Kozsan (Hollis, N.H.), Kendra Kirby (Redding, Conn.), Anne Statham (Milton, Mass.), Micaela Raftery (Nashua, N.H.), Elsa Crozier (East Haddam, Conn.), and sophomore Jessica McBrien (Medfield, Mass.) were going to compete. The boat was able to reach the starting line prior to the day being cancelled. The boat looked poised and smooth in the rough conditions on their row back to the dock. That boat is looking forward to getting a chance to race down the course next week.
The Women's Open 8 was to be comprised of Wolter, Shanahan, Czernicki, Mercieri, junior Kathryn Hartong (Springfield, Ill.), junior Rachele Stein (Washington, D.C.), McKinnon, junior Brooke Bulawka (Bolton, Mass.), and in bow was Phaneuf.
