CCC TOURNAMENT: No. 2 Roger Williams Tops No. 3 Endicott On Day Two, 8-5

BRISTOL, R.I.  – The third-seeded Endicott baseball team fell to second-seeded Roger Williams University, 8-5, on day two of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Friday evening at Paolino Field.

Roger Williams' starter Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) earned the win (7-1) on 7 1/3 innings, five hits, three runs (zero earned), one walk, and a game-high six strikeouts.

Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.) also locked down his first save of the season via 1 1/3 shutout innings. Vernacatola entered the game in the eighth inning with the tying run at the plate, but induced a groundout to the first batter he faced to end the threat before yielding just one hit in the ninth.

Meanwhile, Endicott starter Cooper Anibal (Bedford, N.H.) was saddled with the loss (2-2) as he allowed eight hits, five runs (all earned), no walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work.

After the Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, Endicott responded in the top of the third inning behind an RBI double from Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.) that drove in Christian Allaire (Sandown, N.H.).

However, Roger Williams answered in the seventh with three more runs for a sizeable cushion that held true despite a four-run eighth from the Gulls.
