Baseball Shuts Out Bates, 8-0

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Endicott baseball team defeated Bates College, 8-0, on Thursday evening in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Center. 

Sophomore outfielder Anthony Macchia (Ridgefield, Conn.) highlighted the contest for the Gulls with a three-run home run in the seventh inning, while Dan Cacciola (Saugus, Mass.), John Duffy (Stratford, Conn.), and Matthew McKinley (Hudson, N.H.) all recorded RBI singles to aid Endicott in the win.

The Gulls also scored two runs in the eighth inning on a throwing error and a wild pitch to account for the remainder of the scoring.

Meanwhile, Endicott reliever Alexander Mandrus (Acton, Mass.) earned the win (1-1) on three scoreless frames, two hits, zero walks, and one strikeout.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott picked up its second consecutive win over Bates in the all-time series.
  • Macchia hit his first career collegiate home run. 
  • It also marked the Gulls' first home run this season.
  • The Blue and Green ended Bates' three-game winning streak today.
  • Endicott turned two double plays in the matchup, including a 3-5-4 double play on a sacrifice bunt attempt with two on and no outs in the sixth inning.
  • First baseman Kyle Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) initiated the double play when he crashed hard on the sacrifice bunt attempt down the first base line, scooped up the grounder, and fired a strike to third base. 
  • From there, Matt Bald (De Pere, Wisc.) threw a dart across the diamond to first base after McKinley, Endicott's second baseman, made the heads up play to cover first and convert the twin killing.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (2-2) takes on Wisconsin-Stevens Point and New Paltz in Auburndale, Florida on Sunday, March 17 at 10 AM and 1:45 PM, respectively. Bates (3-5) visits MIT on Saturday, March 16 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12 PM.
