BEVERLY, Mass. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team lost to MIT, 3-2, in non-conference play on Thursday evening at North Field.
MIT starter Nick Charchut (Santa Monica, Calif.) picked up the win (1-1) via 5 1/3 innings, three hits, one run (earned), four walks, and three strikeouts. Teammates Jared Tramontano (Corona, Calif.) and Adam Katz (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) notched holds as both relievers tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the pen, respectively. Tommy Hannan (San Marino, Calif.) also collected the save (1) despite giving up a run in the ninth.
Endicott starter Liam Burke (Westwood, Mass.) was tagged with the loss (1-1) on 3 2/3 innings, five hits, three runs (all earned), and two walks. Alexander Mandrus (Acton, Mass.) was solid out of the pen as the sophomore righty shut out the Engineers over the next 3 1/3 innings (0 hits, 0 walks, game-high 5 strikeouts), while Will Bryant (Cumberland, Maine) finished off the final two frames on two hits, no runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
Endicott jumped on the board first on an RBI groundout off the bat of Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.) in the first, but MIT answered with a solo run in the third and two more in the fourth before holding off a late rally in the ninth by the Gulls to secure the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Brendan McDonald (Quincy, Mass.) knocked in Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) from third base on a groundout to second in the ninth to record his seventh RBI of the season.
- Mandrus struck out the side in the fifth (all swinging).
- Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) had Endicott's only multi-hit game on the day as the senior right fielder ripped a pair of singles up the middle (second, sixth).
- Despite the loss, Endicott still holds a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series.
FOR THE FOES
- David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tied up the game at 1-1 in the third with a sacrifice fly to center field. He finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.
- Zach Roberts (West Chester, Pa.) gave MIT a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an RBI double to right center, while Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) knocked in the Engineers' all-important insurance run with a single to left center in the same inning.
- Rolland concluded his day at the plate going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
WHAT'S NEXT
No. 23 Endicott (8-3) completes its four-game homestand tomorrow against Wesleyan (Conn.) at 4 PM. MIT (5-5) hosts Suffolk University tomorrow at 3:30 PM.
