PASADENA, Calif. – In their penultimate game of their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule for spring break, the Endicott offense put on a show in an 18-4 triumph over Caltech Friday afternoon.
The Gulls' lineup put up 18 runs on 16 hits as five different players had multi-hit games. Leading the way at the plate for Endicott were junior outfielder Matt Bald (De Pere, Wisc.) as well as freshman infielders Matthew McKinley (Hudson, N.H.) and Jacob Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) who all knocked in three baserunners apiece in the win.
Senior Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) and freshman first baseman Kyle Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) also drove in two runs each while senior second baseman Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a RBI, and a stolen base. Gulls junior outfielder Dan Cacciola (Saugus, Mass.) matched DeDonato with a team-high three runs scored.
Equally as impressive as Endicott offensive output was the pitching performances by starter Joseph Brown (Poultney, Vt.) and relievers Zachary Sultar (South Windsor, Conn.) and Alexander Zaiser (Naples, Fla.). Brown (1-0), making his second start of the week, went six innings to earn the win as he allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Sultan pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Zaiser who threw two scoreless frames with only one free pass and four strikeouts.
Caltech fell behind 11-0 after the first two innings before putting up three runs in the bottom of the second. The Beavers saw junior Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W. Va.) hit a ground-rule RBI followed by a one-out, two-RBI single by senior David Watson (Windsor, Colo.).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This was the first-ever meeting between Endicott and Caltech.
- Endicott's 18-run, 16-hit outburst fell short of the program record of 28 runs on 27 hits recorded on May 5, 2016 in a win over Gordon.
- Bald finished the game a homer shy of the cycle after going 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. This was his second three-hit game of the season.
- McKinley also recorded his second three-hit game of his rookie campaign.
- This was DeDonato's 18-career three-hit game. He had seven such games in the 2017 season.
FOR THE FOES
- Beavers starting pitcher Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y.) suffered the loss (1-2) in his fifth appearance and third start of the season.
- No Caltech batter had ore than one hit in the game.
Watson had a team-high two RBI while Moffat and Perry added one RBI apiece. - Moffatt also had two runs scored.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott (6-1) wraps up their SCIAC spring break schedule on Saturday at 2:00 PM EST in their second game of the week against Redlands (15-5, 7-2 SCIAC). Redlands defeated Endicott 13-2 this past Monday. Caltech (3-14, 0-9 SCIAC) returns to the diamond on Monday when they face Williams.
