GORHAM, Maine – The Endicott baseball team traveled up to Gorham, Maine looking to upset one of the nation's top teams and the defending NCAA runner-up Southern Maine for the second time this spring, but the Gulls were bested 6-5 by the #6/#7 ranked Huskies on the road to fall to 18-8 overall on the season.
Endicott hosts CCC opponent Wentworth (13-14, 6-8) on Friday, April 18th for two games starting at 4:00 pm. The Leopards have been idle since Sunday when they lost a pair of conference games to Western New England. Endicott went 2-1 against Wentworth last season, two victories during the regular season and a loss in the opening game of the CCC Tournament as the Gulls had to play from the loser's bracket to capture their first title since the 2006 season.
Endicott owned a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Huskies got an infield single by freshman Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) to drive home Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) for one of his three RBI in the game. Senior John Carey (South Portland, Maine) followed, after Gulls freshman Eric Nagle (Manchester, Conn.) came on relief of starter Davarn Nova (Wareham, Mass.), with a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 5-4 game.
McDonough plated his third base runner of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice grounder to short that brought home Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.) from third. With a 6-4 deficit, Endicott responded in the top half of the seventh on a RBI single through the right side of the infield by sophomore Corbin Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) that scored senior Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) to make it a one-run game.
Endicott went down 1-2-3 in the eighth but in the seventh saw Gold reach scoring position with two outs, but Southern Maine junior Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) got the third out on a fly out to center for his fourth save of the season.
Gold went 3-fo-5 in the game with a walk, two runs scored, and a RBI while sophomore leadoff man Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) reached base three times with two hits and a walk with one run scored.
Nagle pitched well in relief, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run on one hit and one walk with a strikeout.
