Box Score - Game Two
PAXTON, Mass. – Endicott College posted wins of 5-3 and 10-8 to move to 11-1 in TCCC play, as the Gulls swept a conference doubleheader against Anna Maria on Sunday afternoon in Paxton, Mass. Endicott returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue and Green cross town lines to battle Gordon College in a twinbill.
Freshman \#Eric Lemke\# (Southington, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in each game of the doubleheader. James McNamara (Worcester, Mass.) collected his 116th career hit, becoming AMC's all-time hits leader.
Lemke sparked the Gulls by going 4-for-6 with four runs scored from the leadoff spot, while also driving in two runs. Senior catcher \#Joe Klein\# (Monroe, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in game one, while freshman \#Victor Resto\# (Framingham, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a triple, a homer, two runs batted in, and three runs scored in the second game of the double-dip.
After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first inning, senior \#Colin McGinn\# (Tolland, Conn.) settled in and tossed six scoreless frames the rest of the way to earn the win in game one. McGinn struck out five batters, taking the complete-game victory and improving his record to 5-1 on the year. Sophomore \#Benjamin Petrides\# (Belchertwon, Mass.) went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits to earn the victory in game two, improving to 3-1 overall.
Senior JK Vaughn (Simsbury, Conn) paced the AMCATS, going 4-for-7 on the day with three runs batted in, while shortstop Mike Galvin (Rutland, Mass.), freshman Mike Guarnieri (Wallington, Conn.), sophomore Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.), and junior Andy Fallon each collected three hits in the doubleheader.
Catcher Jeff Kodys (Holden, Mass.) launched two home runs in game two, driving in a team-high four runs on the day, while junior James McNamara (Worcester, Mass.) became Anna Maria’s all-time hits leader with a base knock to left in game two. Despite taking the loss, McNamara pitched well in game one, going 6 2/3 innings while surrendering four earned runs and striking out eight.
In game one, the Gulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lemke came home on a costly Anna Maria error.
The AMCATS responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as Scafidi, Jeff Lander (Gloucester, Mass.) and Vaughn each delivered RBI-singles.
After getting a run back on Klein’s solo shot in the second, the Gulls took the lead with two more in fifth. Lemke smacked an RBI-single through the left side, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and eventually came home on a go-ahead single by sophomore \#Colin Sitarz\# (West Hartford, Conn.) to give EC a 4-3 lead.
The Gulls added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and the two-run cushion was more than enough for McGinn, who held the AMCATS scoreless for the final six innings to close out the 5-3 win.
It was the AMCATS who took the early 1-0 lead in game two, as Guarnieri delivered a first-inning solo shot to right to put AMC on top.
However, the Gulls rallied for five runs in the top of the second, as a costly two-out error opened the door for a big inning. Senior \#Aaron Santos\# (Cambridge, Mass.) contributed the big hit of the inning with a bases-clearing three-run double to right center.
The AMCATS chipped away at the Endicott lead with runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, including a solo home run from Kodys in the fourth, to claw back to within one at 5-4.
Once again, the Gulls were able to respond, scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. Resto led off the inning with a solo shot to left, while shortstop \#Chris Dominguez\# (Braintree, Mass.) smacked a two-run double, and Sitarz added an RBI-single to center during the rally.
Trailing 10-4 and down their final out with the bases empty in the seventh, the AMCATS continued to fight. After an RBI-single by Vaughn, Kodys launched his second homer of the game with a three-run shot to right centerfield. Senior Judson Evarts (North Ferrisburg, Vt.) followed with a single to right, and the AMCATS brought the tying run to the plate. However, EC’s Kevin Dupras (Belchertown, Mass.) was able to bear down and retire the final batter on a ground ball to short, preserving the 10-8 victory.
The Gulls will take to the field again on Wednesday when they travel to face rival Gordon College at 2:00 p.m., while the AMCATS return to action on Tuesday, hosting Becker in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
