Gulls split with Bowdoin to open 2009

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Endicott College baseball team opened its 2009 campaign by splitting a double-header with Bowdoin College on Saturday in Winter Haven, Fla. The Polar Bears won an offensive battle in game one, downing the Gulls 12-8, only to have Endicott respond with a 5-4 victory in game two.

The Bowdoin offense came to play in game one as the Polar Bears belted out five home runs in the win. Reid Auger hit a pair of homers while Jason Koperniak, Brett Gorman and Garner also connected for round-trippers. Koperniak had a team-high three hits including a pair of doubles in addition to his homer. Joe Pace went four innings for the win, scattering four walks and five hits in the victory.

The Gulls were able to rally back from a fourth inning deficit to slip away with a 5-4 win in game two. Bowdoin led 4-2 after four; however the Blue and Green scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh to take the win. Aaron Santos (Cambridge, Mass.) led off the seventh with a triple, eventually scoring on an RBI single by sophomore Christopher Dominguez (Braintree, Mass.).

Junior Matt Sharon (Wallingford, Vt.) pitched two innings of one hit, no run ball to earn the win for the Gulls. Dave Weinreich (Milford, Conn.) recorded the save as he shut the door on the Polar Bears with a no-hit seventh.
