NEWPORT, RI - The seventh-seeded Endicott College baseball team fell to No. 2 Salve Regina University for the second time in four days as the Seahawks elimated the Gulls from the CCC Tournament with a 12-7 win on Saturday. The Gulls finish the 2007 season with a 16-21 overall record.
The Seahawks (27-10) jumped out to a six-run lead after four innings and held on from there. Senior Joseph Leafe (Manchester, NH) pitching provided a huge boost out of the bullpen, throwing four strong innings of relief to preserve the win for starter John Zuccaro (Hanover, MA (3-3). Leafe allowed just two runs and struck out seven to pick up his first save of the year.
With Salve Regina leading 7-4, Leafe entered in the top of the sixth with two runners on and no outs. A single by Aaron Santos (Cambridge, MA/Cushing Academy) pulled Endicott within two at 7-5, and the Gulls had runners on second and third with one out. Leafe settled down and struck out Brian Anderson (Grafton, MA/Grafton) and Joe Orlando (Gloucester, MA/Goucester) back-to-back to end the threat.
An inning later, Leafe struck out Adam Labbe (Litchfield, ME/Oak Hill Regional) with runners on second and third to again stymie a threat.
Salve Regina's 2-6 hitters - Matt Finlayson (Higganum, CT), Justin Collett (South Portland, ME), Davin Sirpenski (Voluntown, CT), Robert Peruzzotti (Mystic, CT) and B.J. Pivonka (Tolland, CT) - combined for nine hits, eight stolen bases and 10 runs scored. Steve Tressler (Phoenix, AZ) and Bobby Kemple (Ithaca, NY) added five hits to the attack.
Endicott was paced by Ryan Scanlon (Lowell, MA/Lowell), who had a double, two singles and one RBI. Orlando had a double, single and two RBI for the Gulls.
