Endicott Sweeps AMC to Stay Atop CCC Standings

PAXTON, MA - Endicott College maintained its three-game lead in the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings, sweeping Anna Maria College in a doubleheader with wins of 19-2 and 11-3 Monday afternoon.

The Gulls evened their record at 11-11 overall and improved to 9-1 in conference play while AMC fell to 0-19 overall (0-10 CCC). In each game, every one of the Endicott starting nine hit safely.

EC leadoff hitter Erik Fields (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) was 4-for-5 in the opener with two runs scored and seven runs batted in. He followed that up with a tremendous encore in the second game, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He recorded a triple in each contest.

In game one, the Gulls scored in each of the first three frames, breaking the game open with five runs in the third. Junior right fielder Joe Orlando (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) was 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Dan Gomez (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), Gavin Softic (Athol, MA/Ahol/Cushing), Mark Vaughan (North Reading, MA/North Reading), Todd Strong (Topsham, ME/Mt. Ararat), and Adam Labbe (Litchfield, ME/Oak Hill Regional) all delivered two hits in the win.

Sophomore Kyle Schmutte (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) pitched a complete game seven-hitter to earn the win. He allowed one earned run while fanning nine and walking one.

Endicott jumped out to a 5-2 lead after three and plated five runs over the final two frames to beat AMC, 11-3, in the second game. Fields (3-for-4), Gomez (2-for-5) and Strong (2-for-4) all batted in two runs while Endicott starter Mike Brown (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) went the distance to earn the win. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Gulls are back in action Tuesday afternoon, hosting the University of Southern Maine (4:00 PM).
