Final Stats

BEVERLY, MA - The Gulls took on the Pilgrims of New England College this afternoon and completed their second sweep of the weekend as they beat the Pilgrims by scores of 2-0 and 5-4. The first game of the double header took only an hour and forty-five minutes to complete as a pitchers duel occurred between the Gulls' senior Matt Bishop (Woburn, MA/Woburn) and Pilgrims' Dan Pratt (Concord, NH/WNEC). There were a combined five hits in the first game while the pitchers recorded a combined 15 strikeouts. The second game was a nail-biter for the Gulls but they were able to pull out the victory with a walk-off walk by junior Steve Vidmosko (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep).

The first game was dominated by the pitchers as the Gulls were actually able to record their first run of the game before their first hit. After that run was scored by junior Joe Orlando (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester), Vidmosko broke the no-hitter in the next at-bat. Vidmosko's hit scored junior Erik Fields (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) when he had reached on a throwing error to put the Gulls up 2-0. Bishop pitched a strong game for the Gulls in which he recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings of work while allowing just three hits and one walk. Pratt finished with a line of six strikeouts, five walks allowed, two runs, and just two hits.

The second game was much better for the Gulls as they were able to get out to an early lead in the first inning when Fields scored on a wild pitch by Pilgrims starter Sean Benoit (Pelham, NH/Northern Essex CC). The Pilgrims were able to tie the game in the third inning knocking Gulls starter Chris Serrano (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) out of the game when they scored runs on back to back doubles by Jordan Morgan (East Weymouth, MA/Archbishop William) and Andrew Heath (Middleton, MA/Masconomet). Freshman Dave Weinreich (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) came in to relieve for Serrano and pitched three innings of no-hit baseball until the Pilgrims were able to touch him for a lead-off single in the seventh when Joe Leo (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) singled to right. Sophomore John Bedard came into relieve Weinreich a batter later and Pratt was able to drive in the tying run also on a single to right field. The Gulls answered back in the bottom of the inning when Orlando led off the inning with a double followed by Tom Warner's (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) bunt single. The Pilgrims then chose to intentionally walk Fields to load the bases and the Pilgrims brought in Phillip Achee (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School) to relieve Benoit. Vidmosko was at the plate as the game was decided when he took Achee's first four pitches for balls and walked down to first to win the game.

These wins brings the Gulls to a record of 6-10 (4-0 CCC) while the losses drop New England College to 2-15 (1-7 CCC). The Gulls are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Worcester State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
