INTERNSHIP MODEL | GULL2GULL MENTORING PROGRAM | STUDENT STORIES
BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Mike Sudora (Monroe, Conn.), who is a senior on the men's lacrosse team and a criminal justice major at Endicott, is currently interning with the City of Gloucester's Harbormaster. Here's a look into his internship experience.
ECGULLS: Describe your overall internship experience.
SUDORA: So far I have loved my internship experience. I work with a good group of people and enjoy every day I get to go to work. It is an unbelievable experience getting the opportunity to be on the waters of Gloucester, which is the oldest seaport in the United States. It has been awesome working on boats and learning the ins-and-outs of maritime law enforcement.
ECGULLS: What have you learned from your internship?
SUDORA: The Harbormaster has a very unique position in the law enforcement field. The Harbormaster's Office has the responsibility of overseeing the City of Gloucester's waterways and enforcing all local, state, and federal environmental laws. I have gained valuable experience learning the various aspects of maritime law enforcement and marine fisheries law. I have also had the chance to grow my skills working on boats and on the water.
ECGULLS: How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?
SUDORA: This internship has enlightened me on the many different aspects of maritime law enforcement. Now that I have this experience I am a much more well-rounded candidate for jobs in different areas of law enforcement. I have obtained knowledge and experiences here that can carry over to different careers. I have also made valuable connections with my coworkers who will be references for me in the future.
ECGULLS: What kind of networking have you done at your internship?
SUDORA: While working at my internship with the City of Gloucester's Harbormaster, I have networked with the following departments and agencies: Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit, Massachusetts Environmental Police, City of Gloucester Police Department, United States Coast Guard, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, City of Gloucester Officials, NOAA Fisheries Patrol Officers and City of Gloucester Shellfish Warden. By working with various departments I have had the chance to network with many different people which has been an advantage of my internship.
ECGULLS: Do you have a favorite experience or story from your internship? If so, what was it?
SUDORA: Every day is something new here at the Gloucester Harbormaster's Office. Whether we are going on one of the boats or going to court it is always something different. The unpredictability of what the days can bring has been my favorite part of my internship.
