This Week in Endicott Athletics History - October 20th-October 26th

We sure do wish we had a time machine. These are the moments from this week in Endicott Athletics history when the home crowd was on the edge of their seats, opposing teams slowly walked off the field, records were shattered, and champions were made. This week’s walk down memory lane features football offensive records, the only hat-trick in men’s soccer recent history, conference titles for golf and women’s tennis, an overtime thriller for field hockey, and a five-set battle for women’s volleyball.

October 20th, 2012 – Football Shatters Records in 61-15 Rout of UMass Dartmouth

In his first season as quarterback of the Gulls football team, then sophomore Drew Frenette (New Bedford, Mass.) threw for a program record 450 yards with four touchdowns and helped to orchestrate a team record 709 yards of total offense (474 pass, 235 rush) in a 61-15 win over UMass Dartmouth. Senior wide out Mike Murphy set a record with 210 receiving yards and tied the record for receptions in a single game with 12, previously set by Mike Fimiani. Endicott’s ground game was fueled by a variety of runners including Mike Wheeler (67 yards, TD), Andrew Cummings (60 yards, TD), Cody Sinnott (53 yards), and Jared DiBiase (41 yards, TD). With the win, Endicott improved to 6-2 and went on to win the 2012 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl.

October 21st, 2008 – Bryan Lee’s Hat-Trick Helps Men’s Soccer Beat UNE

Our game-by-game statistics for men’s soccer only go back to around 2006 and we have to believe there was a hat trick somewhere for Mike Francis in his 18-goal season in 1998, but there is no denying that Bryan Lee’s three-goal effort in 2008 against UNE ranks among the best single-match performances in team history. Trailing 2-1 late in the second half, with Endicott’s first goal being scored by Lee from Kyle Schmutte in the 41st minute of the first half, Lee tied the match with an unassisted tally at 73:59 scoring off a rebound. With just 2:27 remaining in regulation, Lee struck again off an assist from Ryan Coates to deliver the 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Nor’easters.

October 22nd, 2009 – Men’s Golf captures 2009 TCCC Championship

Back when the fall CCC Invitational served as the conference championship in 2009, the Endicott golf team won the program’s second league title by nine strokes over Nichols at Essex Country Club. Andrew LaRocque played a stellar back-nine and turned in a 76 (41-35) on his scorecard with Drew Sullivan finishing a stroke behind him with a 77 (36-41). LaRocque and Sullivan finished in second and third place in the individual standings overall. Endicott’s winning golf tradition has continued since then as the Blue and Green have won three straight CCC Championships.

October 23rd, 2004 – Field Hockey Takes Down Seahawks in an Overtime Thriller

On Homecoming Weekend in 2004, the Endicott field hockey faced off with a Salve Regina squad that was previously unbeaten in their CCC schedule at 6-0. In a back-and-forth game, the Gulls held a 4-3 lead with only minutes left in regulation. Seahawks forward Megan Brockerick tallied her second goal of the game to tie it up with just 4:08 remaining as the two teams would head into overtime. In the first of two potential 15-minute extra periods, Endicott provided the dramatics as Ashley Wallace halted the Seahawks’ attempt to move downfield and fed the ball up to forward Kim Doody. Doody and then freshman Jennifer Rheaume both fired shots on the Salve keeper’s pads but it was Caitlin Murray who collected a rebound and finished to the back of the net for the 5-4 overtime victory.

October 24th, 2007 – Women’s Volleyball Sneaks Past Colby-Sawyer in Five Sets

Back when Colby-Sawyer was a CCC member, the Gulls and Chargers frequently battled on the hard court. From 2003-10, in fact, Endicott and Colby-Sawyer played in five separate five-set matches including two from the 2007 season. In 2007, before Endicott defeated Colby-Sawyer in five sets to win their third CCC title in four years, these two programs had a knock-down, drag-out showdown in the regular season. Endicott would win the match 3-2 (27-30, 30-22, 19-30, 30-26, 15-10) behind a 54-assist, 20-dig effort by all-time assist leader Meghan Hall and 21 kills, 14 digs, and five aces from all-time kill leader Stephanie Wiese.

October 25th, 2008 – Women’s Tennis Wins First Conference Title

In the 2008-09 season, the Endicott women’s tennis team set a program record with 18 wins including a 5-2 victory in the CCC Championship for their first conference title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. In doubles play, the duos of Kate Cioffi-Alyson Boehm and Kate Fiske-Jenna Carme won 8-5 and 8-3, respectively, to give the Blue and Green a 2-1 lead heading into singles action. Cioffi took her #1 singles match 6-2, 6-2 and Boehm and Lori Waldner would also win in straight sets to secure the program’s first CCC Championship win in five trips to the big match.

October 26th, 1999 – Women’s Soccer Beats Gordon 1-0 in CCC Quarterfinals

Endicott Athletics joined the CCC for the 1999-00 season and in their first CCC Tournament appearance that fall, the Endicott women’s soccer started their run towards winning the 1999 CCC Championship with a 1-0 victory over Gordon in the quarterfinals. Laurie Lang scored the lone goal in the game for Endicott who also got two sets in net from Beth MacLeod, number two on the all-times saves and goalie wins lists, to preserve the playoff shutout. Endicott would go on for two more 1-0 tournament wins in the semifinal and championship rounds to earn their first-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament.
