Jamie Zompa, a sophomore from Marlborough, Mass., has been chosen for the focus of this installment of the “Endicott Student-Athlete Spotlight” for her works both on the court of competition, and even more important, off of it. Jamie is a sophomore Accounting major and is a member of the women's tennis team that won their fourth straight CCC title in the fall and will be competing in the NCAA tournament in the next two weeks. We were able to catch up with Jamie and ask her a few questions for our segment.
Why did you choose to be a Division III student-athlete?
I chose to be a Division III athlete because I am able to balance being an athlete, while also being involved in other organizations and activities on campus.
What do you like most about being a student-athlete at Endicott?
I like being a student-athlete at Endicott because of all of the wonderful opportunities I have been given, such as getting to know a great group of teammates, as well as competing in NCAAs.
What are some of the greatest lessons you have learned from being a student-athlete?
I have learned how to manage my time well and that winning is not everything. You are going to play opponents that are better than you, the important thing is to always take something positive away from your game, even if you lost. The score may not show the improvement you are making, but focusing on mastering little things at a time is how you improve your overall game.
Who have been the most influence people in your athletic career?
My friends, family, past and present coaches, and my teammates.
How would your teammates describe you?
I think that my teammates would describe me as sometimes silly, but always a hard worker with a positive attitude. I am always cheering on my teammates and aiming to improve my game.
What is your greatest sports moment?
My greatest sports moment was being the deciding winning match when we played in the first round of NCAAs last year, along with being on a conference winning team two years in a row.
Which public figure (athlete, politician, entertainer, etc) would you most like to meet and what one question would you ask them?
I would love to meet Tom Brady. His composure on the field is something I admire, and well, I mean the fact that he is a football legend influences my choice too. I would definitely ask him out on a date (sorry Gisele).
What internships have you completed (or are a part of now)? What benefit have you gotten out of them?
My freshman year I interned at a commercial real estate firm in my hometown. This past year I interned at Hologic in the finance department. The first internship helped me realize I wanted a career in accounting and my second internship helped me realize I wanted to focus on finding a semester internship in public accounting.
Name three things on your "bucket list".
To meet Tom Brady (but I would settle for Gronk), travel to all 7 continents, and to run a marathon.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years after graduation? What is your dream job?
I hope to either be a partner in a public auditing firm, or to become a CFO of a company. My dream job would to become a partner and own a CPA firm.
What would you say to someone currently in high school who is considering attending Endicott?
Without a doubt, you should come here. The opportunities are endless. The professors are extremely helpful, the student body is a great group of people, and the internship program really does get you one step ahead of the game. The fact that the school has three private beaches is a plus too...
Is there something about you that we don't know? Tell is something special about yourself that we haven't asked!
My favorite animal is a penguin, and someday I hope to visit the one beach I know of where you can swim with penguins.
